Spend positively

How does your gym membership help fight homelessness? How can a cup of coffee from our café give a young person a new home?

YMCA’s Health & Wellbeing services, Children, Youth & Family services and Catering services are run as social enterprises with surpluses used to support our community projects across South West London.

Last year we housed over 650 homeless people in our hostels and move-on houses, and as well as providing shelter for people who would otherwise be sleeping rough or sofa surfing, we run Life Skills courses that help prepare YMCA residents to live independently. We also help them to find work experience placements, to gain qualifications, to manage their money and to generally change their lives for the better.

So, by using our cafes, soft plays and gyms and exercise classes, you are not only improving your health and eating good affordable food – you are also helping others to make positive changes.

Thank you!

Work for us

If job satisfaction and a desire to make a positive difference come high on your wish list when looking for a job, then consider working for YMCA London South West.

We have been around since 1874 and our purpose has always been the same; to encourage people to be all they can be. This holds true for staff and volunteers as much as for the people we help and provide services for. Staff are encouraged to continually grow through a training and development programme with opportunities to study for further qualifications.

A message from CEO, Richard James

As part of my job I have the privilege of going around and talking about the work of the YMCA. One of the things that I often say is that the YMCA is one of those organisations that has 95% brand awareness but often only 5% brand understanding. Even here in South West London where we have been operating for over 140 years, people often have own particular perspective on who and what the YMCA does.

For example in North Kingston people know the YMCA Hawker and the Sports or Softplay, in Hampton people know us because they have swum at Hampton Pool or have, in the last 12 months been along to an exercise class or the café at the YMCA White House. For those in Surbiton and Wimbledon we are often known for our high street sites that provide a home to over 200 people ever night as well as our ever popular, but affordable gyms.

Whilst people might know their local YMCA centre they might not know that we are part of the largest and the oldest charity working with young people in the world. Across England there are 114 YMCAs that have federated together to provide community that transform lives. Together we focus on young people and help them play an active and fulfilling role within their communities. We call this a youth minded community approach.
