We need people to befriend our new or current members with a disability (or those that need additional support), and act as their buddy for an hour once a week, attending inclusive activity classes and gym sessions with them at YMCA Hawker in Kingston. Could you help? Do you have some spare time and would like to volunteer?

Our Inclusive Lives Project is all about improving the health and wellbeing of those with a disability, and giving them opportunities to take part in fitness activities that they might not easily have access to. It’s quite daunting for a person with a disability to attend the gym or an activity class if they feel vulnerable and alone, so a friendly buddy who can accompany them would make all the difference. It’s a rewarding and interesting volunteer role where you can learn new skills and meet new people.

To be a buddy, you need empathy, patience and enthusiasm! All we ask is that you commit to an hour a week, initially from 31 October until 16 December, apply for a Disclosure & Barring Check (necessary for all volunteers) and attend a short training session with us. As a YMCA volunteer we cover your out of pocket expenses and we will celebrate with our buddies at an end of year Christmas celebration.

Line Dancing: Mon, 11.15am-12.15pm & Wed, 11.30am-12.30pm
Inclusive Yoga: Mon, 12.45pm-1.45pm
Supported Gym: Weds, 10.30am-11.30am
Inclusive Zumba: Thurs, 12.30pm-1.30pm & Fri, 11.00am-12.00pm
Danceability: Fri, 12.30pm-1.30pm
Gym: Any time
