Love singing? You’ll love our community choir!

August 8, 2017

Did you know that everyone can sing? You use the same muscles that you use for speaking, so you have the equipment!

You might think you can’t a sing a note, but you’ll be surprised what you can learn to do at the YMCA Surbiton Community Choir. Made up of about 25 members, the choir welcomes everyone from all walks of life to join them and discover just why singing in a community choir feels so good.

Led by an experienced choirmaster, the choir is all about having fun with songs you’ll love to sing. Contemporary, catchy and with innovative musical arrangements, you’ll find yourself humming the tunes all week. At the moment the choir’s repertoire includes powerful numbers such as Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics and My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion (the big Titanic hit!).

So what makes a great community choir? Confidence is key, whether you have four people or 40, if those people really believe in themselves and singing, it will always sound powerful. Naturally with greater numbers it will have more impact, but there’s no difference in quality.

YMCA Chaplain Jacky Bone is a member and welcomes anyone who would like to join – no experience necessary! “The choir members have joined because they want to be part of something special and to have some fun. Many people want to do it purely for the physical enjoyment of singing – and using lots of muscles to sing means you feel good afterwards, not to mention the emotional high. It’s all good stuff!” she says.

The choir is currently working towards a performance in September when the members will have eight full numbers under their belt. Choosing these songs, the choirmaster knows they need to be fun and a combination of what the choir needs and what the audience will love to hear.

Choir sessions generally tend to be a quick warm up, then a run-through of the songs that the choir members already know. There are breaks as different sections of the choir practice, so people have a chance to socialise.

Interested in joining this inspirational community choir? Choir sessions take place every Wednesday, 7pm-8.30pm in the café at YMCA Surbiton, and it costs just £3.50 per person (concessions available for unemployed and those with a disability). Come along on a Wednesday evening to see what it’s all about, or send an email to Jacky Bone at jackybone@ymcalsw.org for more information.
