Family Work
We believe every family should have the support they need to develop and lead more fulfilling lives.

Whether it is child care services like After School Clubs and Breakfast Clubs; activities such as karate, tennis and dance where children can develop their skills and push their boundaries; special occasion Soft Play parties or fun activities at Holiday Camps – our Family and Children’s services are designed for the whole family, helping them balancing busy week days, and getting the most out of family time spent together.

As a part of our Family and Children’s work, we offer a range of different services including:

After School clubs

Bridging the gap between the end of school and the end of the working day is often a challenge. YMCA London South West provides an affordable and reliable After School Club service across all our YMCA Centres and within local schools across the Boroughs of Merton and Kingston.

Children are collected from school either by minibus or escorted on foot, given a nutritious snack and provided with a choice of creative and sporty activities. Our YMCA LSW Centres are blessed with both indoor and outdoor facilities with lots of space to let off steam after school or chill out with school friends.

Our After School Clubs caters for children of all abilities. If your child has additional needs or requirements, please contact us so that we can talk about what we can do to help your child feel happy and comfortable. YMCA LSW accepts childcare vouchers. Currently, we run After School Clubs at the following sites:

Breakfast Club at YMCA Hawker

If your hectic schedule means you need childcare before school, then the Breakfast Club at YMCA Hawker may be just what you’re looking for. Opening at 7.45am, the club is a safe, welcoming place for children aged 4 to 11 to play with friends, catch up with homework or relax before the day really gets going.

We serve up a healthy breakfast of toast, cereal and juice, before dropping off your child(ren) at two Kingston primary schools – Fernhill and St Agatha’s. All our staff are DBS checked and trained in First Aid. They receive an on-going programme of professional development working towards NVQ qualifications.

Soft Play in the Pod and Pod2

Bash, balance, bump, crawl, chuck, climb, slide, zip and zoom – the Pod at YMCA HAwker is 125 square metres of unadulterated fun! Together with its smaller sister version, the Pod2 at YMCA Wimbledon, our two soft play facilities offer children aged up to 11 active indoor fun, whatever the weather.

The Pod and Pod2 are open 7 days a week for play, sessions, group bookings, private hire and children’s parties. It also incorporates dedicated baby and toddler zones and at YMCA Hawker we also offer a Multi-sensory room, an area with specialised lightning, sounds, visuals and textures providing a calming space for babies, toddlers and children with or without special needs.

Holiday Camps

Running Holiday Camps is something we are very proud of. Not only are we giving something to the children, but for working parents they are a fantastic, affordable childcare solution. The Camps run every day in the school holidays across the Boroughs of Merton and Kingston Upon Thames. Children can try out all sort s of new activities, challenges and sports outdoors and in. We let the children be our guides in terms of what they want to do.

We are also very proud of our work with children who may have special needs or who are more challenging. This may be for a variety of reasons, including autism.

Emma Wiles, Head of Family & Children’s Work explains: “One of the reasons we see so much success with these children is down to continuity of staff; it’s important for these children to have consistency and build a trusting relationship with our workers”.

Residential Camp for Young Carers

The annual Residential Camp for young carers provides a range of outdoor and educational opportunities such as rock climbing, surfing and coasteering to a group of vulnerable young people aged 10-12 years. YMCA LSW works in partnership with the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames to identify and nominate children to attend the residential camp, many of whom are Young Carers, or vulnerable and at risk. Staying at YMCA Newgale in West Wales for one week, the children develop their confidence, positively contribute to team work , learn patience and understanding, personal accountability and to build trust between peers and adult leaders. This is also an opportunity to try something completely new and be encouraged to take positive risks.
