Which of the Williams sisters is the stronger? What happened to Nadal? And can Andy Murray really bring home the Wimbledon trophy again?
It is tennis fever in South West London and it stretches all the way to YMCA Hawker in Kingston upon Thames, where last Sunday, junior players from the YMCA Hawker tennis courses competed in the eighth annual summer tournament at the centre.
It was a great day out by the banks of the river Thames, with a BBQ, prizes for all the competitors and lots of good matches, both singles and doubles.
YMCA Wimbledon made my tennis career
YMCA London South West has a long history as a champion of the noble sport of tennis. Throughout the 1970s, several players taking part in the Wimbledon tournament lodged at the YMCA hostel in Wimbledon whilst preparing for and taking part in the championships.
Roger Taylor, although never a Wimbledon champion, is considered one of the greatest British tennis players of all times. He lived in the hostel at YMCA Wimbledon in the early 1970s. Later, Mr Taylor even said that “if it hadn’t been for the YMCA, I wouldn’t have made it in the sport of tennis”.
Today, tennis is still flourishing in the YMCA in South West London, with lots of talented young players training at YMCA Hawker in Kingston.
And who knows, maybe in a few years’ time some of them will be up there at Centre Court, fighting for the iconic Wimbledon trophy.
