London Fire Fighter raises £1720 to support YMCA LSW Residential for Young Carers

April 30, 2015

A Fire Fighter working for the London Fire Brigade raised £1720 to support the YMCA at this year’s Virgin London Marathon.

Lee Perry, 39, from Addlestone in Surrey, was one of four runners taking on the 26.2 mile course for YMCA London South West on Sunday 26 April. It was Lee’s first marathon, and he completed the run in 4 hours and 22 minutes.

Speaking after the event Lee said:

My finish time was 4hr Lee-Perry-Marathon-runner22mins, which I guess is okay for a first time Marathon runner. I know I can do better next time – and yes, I am saying next time because I will definitely do it again! I enjoyed the whole day so much, it was an amazing experience and overall an amazing day. The crowds were immense and really helped carry you along, constantly calling out your name and offering support. It was an amazing feeling!

During the race I saw my wife and kids who were on the route to support me. This helped to spur me on! At the end of the race, I met up with my family and friends at Westminster Hall with the rest of the YMCA team, which was a great end to the day.

The final stretch when you could see the finish line and realised that all the hard work and dedication had been worthwhile was also quite euphoric. I was able to raise £1720 and I know that this money will be invaluable to the YMCA in helping others that are in need”.

Helping local children get active and experience the great outdoors

The money raised from this year’s Virgin London Marathon will go towards a YMCA Residential for Young Carers from the Royal Borough of Kingston. Here, they get respite from stressful home lives, and they build their confidence and experience the great outdoors.

Debbie Camp, Director of Fundraising & Communications at YMCA London South West, said:

The Virgin London Marathon is one of the most famous and most popular runs of its kind in the world and we are honoured to have had four runners take part for us this year.Lee-Perry-residential-image

It is a special moment for anyone to cross the finishing line, not only because they have achieved something special, but also because they have helped to raise money for a charity that we know is so close to their heart.

The money raised will support YMCA London South West’s services in the local area and help us to give young people the chance to play an active and fulfilling role within their community. If you’re interested in taking part in a sporting event to raise money for the YMCA, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”
