A proposal for the £4.6m refurbishment of the YMCA Surbiton hostel will be on display in the Conference Room in at YMCA Surbiton, 49 Victoria Road on Tuesday 14th October from 4.30pm till 8.30pm.

The proposal includes providing en-suite facilities for all bedrooms and shared kitchens on the hostel floors, enabling residents to cook for themselves. Also windows will be replaced and more efficient gas boilers installed.

Andy Redfearn, Director of Housing and Development at YMCA London South West, said:

Surbiton YMCA hostel has been successfully accommodating single people in housing need for the last 30 years. As a response to changing expectations, and our desire to provide the best opportunity to prepare our residents to successful move on into the community, we need to allow residents to cook for themselves and no longer have to share toilets and showers’.

It is hoped that works will commence in early 2015.

Other services not affected

The refurbishmenSurbiton second floor proposalt proposal also includes building six additional rooms on the top floor of the building, which will allow for residents to keep on living in the hostel whilst the refurbishment work is carried out.

The Gym and Fitness studios on the 1st Floor and the Restaurant and Conference facilities on the Ground Floor will not be affected, and will be held open as usual during the refurbishment period.

Richard James, Chief Executive of YMCA London South West, said:

‘The YMCA has been serving the community of the Royal Borough of Kingston for over 140 years during which our work has grown and developed.  Our YMCA building in Surbiton provides accommodation for single people and families in housing need as well as a good quality but affordable health and fitness facilities, a wide variety of children’s activities and a popular restaurant.

We have been fortunate to secure funding from the Mayor of London to improve this facility and therefore are excited to see these plans come together for a major refurbishment that we expect to benefit the whole community.’
