Excursions, walks, meet ups and more…

WALKS

Our fortnightly walks are FREE and start from YMCA Surbiton, leaving promptly at 10am and returning mid-afternoon.

Wednesday 5 April: Spring on the Ridgeway
Enjoy a bracing walk, with good long stretches! We’ll take the bus to the Ridgeway and make our way over Fetcham Down to the pretty hamlet of Westhumble, north of Dorking. All along the way we’ll be keeping our eyes out for the signs that spring is really here. A delicious lunch at Westhumble, before we catch the bus home. [About 4 miles, some inclines and may be muddy.]

Wednesday 19 April: Architectural gem and burning masterpiece
Make the most of two very different free exhibitions in two very different venues in the vicinity of the Embankment and St Paul’s. We’ll take the train to Waterloo, and we’ll relax over lunch before returning home.  [About 3.5 miles, flat and paved.]

Wednesday 3 May:Discovering St Marylebone
Take an opportunity to walk through this atmospheric part of London, steeped in history. Travel by train and underground to investigate what lies behind the busy thoroughfares and quiet squares of this infamous area of central London. [About 4 miles, flat and paved.]

Wednesday 17 May: A walk in the park
This is a walk guaranteed to take your breath away, as we head to Isabella Plantation to admire the stunning rhododendrons and camelias. Bring your camera! From Ham Common we walk through Ham Gate into Richmond Park and on to Isabella Plantation. Then we wander on to enjoy lunch at Pembroke Lodge before making our way down to the bus home. [About 4 miles, some inclines and possibly muddy in parts.]

Wednesday 7 June: Celebrating transport in London
By special request, we repeat this fantastic outing which includes travel by train, bus, DLR, cable car (£3.30 with Freedom Pass) and river boat (£3.25 with Freedom Pass). We’ll enjoy a relaxed lunch at the O2. [About 2 miles, flat and paved.]

Wednesday 21 June: Wandle Trail
Enjoy the history and the stunning nature of this typical chalk stream – which goes unnoticed as industrial London bustles by. From Wimbledon station we catch the tram to Wandle Park where we pick up the start of the trail. We follow it through Beddington Park and on to Morden Hall Park where we can enjoy a light lunch before taking the tram and train home. [About 4.5miles, flat and mostly paved.]

Although free, personal expenses, such as transport and refreshments are for you to pay. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are in good enough health to participate in these walks.

Thursday 20 April: Tonbridge Castle
The castle is a twin-towered gatehouse which took around 30 years to build and was completed in 1260. Set in the beautiful Tonbridge and Malling Borough of Kent, the castle has great views – and as you wander around you can see and hear about a vibrant history from over 700 years ago. It’s only a short walk from Tonbridge High Street which runs through the centre of this pretty market town, if you wanted to take the opportunity to explore further.
Senior Social Members, £20; Non-members, £23

Thursday 18 May: Loseley House and gardens
This beautiful house has been in the More-Molyneux family for over 500 years. Sir Christopher More, the original purchaser of the land was Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex during the reign of Henry VII and is said to have been a man of considerable influence and power. His son, Sir William Moore, who is a direct ancestor of the current owners, was the one who eventually drove the main building of the house.
