YMCA Surbiton resident Daiva is an art teacher and taught in Lithuania before she came to the UK, so it’s no surprise that she is putting her skills to good use and encouraging other residents to express themselves through art at a group she has set up on a Tuesday evening at the hostel.
She sets challenges each week, with residents exploring different techniques to produce outstanding artwork (see the examples below). Some of the residents who attend have never picked up a paintbrush, and so have very low self-confidence. Daiva is keen to point out that art is subjective, personal and expressive, and just having a go is a step worth taking.
Daiva would like to welcome people (aged over 18) from the local community to join the residents at their Tuesday evening group, 7pm-9pm, as the cafe at YMCA Surbiton is a great space in which to be creative, with good light and a relaxed atmosphere; under her expert guidance new artists will learn a great deal. We would also welcome any donations for the art group, such as old easels, good quality paper and acrylics, and any other artist’s materials.
If you’re interested in coming along to the group (it’s free), send a message to Daiva via her public Facebook page or call YMCA Surbiton on 020 8390 0148 to leave a message for her.
