At YMCA Hawker we offer professional tennis coaching for players of all levels. We have three outdoor floodlit hard courts, and a thriving junior tennis programme including lessons for all ages/standards, weekly matchplays, squads, and junior teams who compete in local competitions.
We also cater for adults, with beginner/improver sessions, squads, coffee mornings, and club nights.
Subject to availability, our courts are available for public hire for £5 per hour (£3 for juniors).
Junior Tennis Programme
Tennis is a fun and effective form of exercise for children, developing co-ordination, flexibility, strategy and teamwork. At YMCA Hawker we offer junior tennis classes for all ages and abilities whether they play for fun or want to progress in the sport. You will find the current Junior Tennis Timetable here.
Our tennis classes focus on the basic technique of the main tennis shots including forehands, backhands, serve and volley. This builds up to rallying and learning how to play matches for the older children. Lessons are taught in a relaxed environment and incorporate fun games, as well as prizes for all children at the end of each term.
Keen juniors can build their skills with Match Play sessions and players who show potential may be invited to join the Junior Squads. YMCA Hawker is also home to the Hawker Jets, our Junior teams that compete in local competitions.
Tennis Coach Trevor Hughesman teaches group lessons for adult beginners and improvers on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings, as well as a Ladies’ Morning on Thursdays. Both run as 5-week courses each side of half-term.
The beginners group is perfect for players new to tennis; you’ll learn all the basic shots and start to play games.
The improvers course is for rusty and inexperience players, who want to improve their technique on the basic shots and develop their game play.
The Ladies’ Tennis group is an instructional, social and fun morning tennis session, with coaching and game play for club-level players and those looking to improve.
