In the Young People's Lodging Scheme (YPLS), we recruit ‘hosts’ who have a spare room to rent out and match them with a young person aged between 16 and 25 who is not yet ready to live and manage on their own. The scheme runs across Sutton and is funded through the support of Sutton Council.
The Hosts
We have a wide range of young people who need supported lodgings so we are looking for a wide range of people to become hosts!
As a lodging scheme host you will be expected to create a safe environment for the young person and also offer guidance and support to help them become more independent and responsible. You are not asked to be a ‘parent’ to the young person; they will be a lodger in your home, however they may need your help with acquiring life skills, such as cooking, cleaning and budgeting.
If you think you can make a difference to a young person and would like to know more, you can download an information booklet here.
Rent
You will receive £100 a week in rent which is paid to you either from the young person or YMCA LSW, depending on the circumstances. Under the Government’s ‘Rent a Room Scheme’ you can receive an annual income of £4,250 tax free.
The Young People
The Scheme is for 16 to 25’s and ideally for those at college or working. The length of the placement will be flexible, depending on the needs of both you and the hosts and could last anywhere between a few months and two years. The appropriateness and length of placements will be reviewed every 3 months.
If you are interested in living in Supported Lodgings, you can download more information here, which will also talk you through the process.
